My hillwalking nowadays is weather dependent so most of the things that I intended to do in 2011 did not get done. Nonetheless, I enjoyed every day that I was out on the hills. Despite 40-odd years of travelling in Scotland, I am still finding areas that I had not previously visited. That's the joy of climbing the sub 2000s, a lot of them are in areas well off the Munro and Corbett track, and they have led me into some fascinating new areas. The western fringe of Galloway was one such; I was drawn there by Craiglee (above Loch Doon) and Craigenreoch, both providing excellent short days.
The area around Elgin was another that I was not really familiar with and it was here that I came across what proved to be my best hill view of the year, from the lowly Bin of Cullen. What good-weather windows there were tended to draw me to the east of the country more often than not; no real hardship as I love the big plateaus of the southern Grampians and I revisited much of the area around Glen Shee. However, most of the hills that I have not yet done or want to revisit are now in the west so here's hoping for a respite from constant Atlantic fronts in 2012.
