2008 was a year affected again by knee problems. I had an operation on my left knee in May, and given the timing it affected the number of days spent on the hill. The highpoint (height wise) was again the 1236m San Jeroni in the Montserrat mountains, again done on a day trip whilst in Barcelona to see England play Andorra.
Our main holiday last year was in the Orkney Islands, where we were impressed by our first sight of the Old Man of Hoy and enjoyed the walk along Westray cliffs, with their abundant birdlife. We had booked self-catering accommodation before we left home, to avoid the problems we had on Shetland in 2007. The only word of warning for Orkney relates to the SubMarilyn, Hill of Miffia, which has awkward electric and barbed wire fences at the top. Our Marilyn total will now start to progress more slowly as we have no new hills within over three hours from home. Consequently we may concentrate more on Donald Deweys and Deweys in 2009.
