A year containing some memorable highlights:
- Cramponing up Ben Lawers at Easter, from the Glen Lyon side. A long, strenuous route, but enjoying the best of Scottish winter walking conditions on top made it more than worthwhile. This was the first time my wife, Sue, had worn crampons, and she loved them.
- Wild camping in Fisherfield in May; another first for Sue. It was our anniversary as well. Aren't I romantic? The weather was perfect and the camping spot beneath Beinn Dearg Mor was idyllic.
- A week in Sutherland followed by a week on Harris in September. The weather wasn't the best for our main holiday, with some rain and a lot of cloud. However, when the sun shone there was nowhere else you wanted to be. The best days were at the end of the two weeks when we had a boat trip to Pabbay, Boreray and Killegray (24), and finished off with a scorcher on Beinn Mhor in the Pairc.
- The Small Isles in July: This turned out to be one of the most delightful weeks away I've ever had. It's difficult to say what made it so enjoyable, but Sue and I both came home knowing we had had an exceptional time. The B&B on Eigg was fantastic, and the weather played fair, enabling us to enjoy An Sgurr at its best. Staying in Kinloch Castle is always going to be fun, as long as you don't mind dust. A perfect day on Askival and Trallval was something I'd been wanting to do since my first visit to Rum ten years previously, which had resulted in doing the hills in a pea-souper. The week finished off with one night's camping on Canna. We'll definitely go back again to the Small Isles, especially as we haven't been to Muck yet, but we'll never have another week quite as special as this.
