Baglog bonanza:

Peter Standing (+102-1=928)

Ten years after logging 118 Marilyns in 2004 and climbing my 600th, Hergest Ridge, I decided it was time to improve on a string of indifferent performances since then. During 2012 and 2013 I had concentrated on completing or visiting new additions to lists such as the Nuttalls, Hewitts, Wainwright outliers, Birketts and the Trail 100. However, in 2014 I moved back to Marilyns with 101 new ascents, 43 of them in regions 27 and 28 of southern Scotland. My annual total would have been 102 had it not been for the survey and demotion of Troweir Hill just seven weeks after I had carefully logged its twin summits. To allow for any late December demotions I thought it prudent to end the year one over a century.

Highlights of the year included the three Lochailort Corbetts in March and fine early winter conditions on Culter Fell in November for my 900th Marilyn. My wife Gillian now refuses to accompany me on Marilyns unless they have good paths and are particularly outstanding peaks. This policy restricted her 2014 ascents to eight and she seemed unconvinced that at least half of the remaining 93 summits were worthwhile expeditions. However, during the brilliantly hot June weather she did join me for a wonderful traverse of the Paps of Jura in perfect conditions. In late May, I joined a boatful of Marilynistas for the ascent of Ailsa Craig in similarly fine weather.
