During 2014, Glenys and I visited Aberdeenshire, Isle of Skye, Glen Elchaig, Helmsdale, the Uists, Barra, Yorkshire, Campbeltown and Arran in order to climb new Marilyns. The weather was generally kind with plenty of sunny intervals and no persistent rain.
Our high points were sightings of white-tailed and golden eagles on Skye, the Uists and Arran. On North Uist we again saw the Yorkshireman (Alan) with his telescope. He was viewing a golden eagle eyrie and we were thrilled to see, for the first time, a parent bird with nearly fledged chick.
I was also pleased to complete regions 7, 9 and 19. Best hills climbed were Healabhal Mhor and Healabhal Bheag on Skye, Eaval and Hecla on North Uist and Maiden Pap from Helmsdale.
As a wonderful finale to the year, on 6 October three golden eagles joined us as we enjoyed our picnic at the summit of Beinn Bhreac on Arran. I have always found the sighting of even one eagle a tremendous uplifting experience to the spirit, let alone three.
