I enjoyed lots of hillwalking in 2012 but only climbed seven new Marilyns. The first was Birks Fell in the Yorkshire Dales on my way to Wales where I climbed a further four - three in the Brecon Beacons and one above the Horseshoe Pass - before coming home prematurely because of the poor weather.

I only climbed two in Scotland but they were both wee gems. My highlight of the year, in August, was Beinn nam Ban. I was lucky that it was a really clear day on which to enjoy this superb viewpoint. My last was Speinne Mor on Mull - again a lovely day, which I finished off at the beach at Calgary Bay followed by a most enjoyable walk round a trail from the nearby tearoom.
