My Marilyn total continues to increase steadily but it's still embarrassingly far out in the garden looking at the back door leading to the narrow passageway which in turn might take me towards the door marking the entrance to the corridor leading to the HoF. Hopefully my total is destined to increase more rapidly when I shortly shift my focus from Munros. However, I continue to bask in the reflected glory of Paul Caban's hillwalking achievements. In June, a select group of us 'helped' Paul up his last Graham, Ben Venue. His request for sunshine was granted, but he forgot to tick the 'no thanks' box beside the offer of hail, so we had some of that too. As with most hillwalking outings involving orienteers, the ascent seemed only vaguely planned, as we wandered generally upwards, spread out over the hillside, finding our own ways up. On the summit Paul produced from his voluminous rucksack a large and ludicrously sweet cake, three options of drink, a matching set of drinking vessels, and the largest bag of crisps ever. He then brought out his book and I witnessed his careful application of the final tick. But that wasn't enough - finally, he produced his summit map and special colouring-in pen. If you look carefully you'll see his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he concentrates on the task in hand. Well done Paul, it's a pleasure and a privilege to help you in this way.
