Hall of Shame:

Hall of Shame: Heather terrors

The Fruin (1E, LR56)

Andy Hyams: I thought this would be an easy stroll from the high point of the road between Faslane and Glen Fruin on the way back from a long day in Glen Kinglas. The worst going is following the fence. It is slightly easier on the Glen Fruin side.

Beinn Trilleachan (3B, LR50)

Harrold Thomson: Having climbed from the north on a gloriously sunny day, we descended the gentle ridge going south. Less than a mile from the loch, heading for the path, the going became desperate, with long grass and even longer heather and bog myrtle. All this disguised a massive network of forestry ditching, into which we both fell on numerous occasions. It was probably the worst bit of country we had ever walked through, and there were midges to compound the misery.

Hill of Persie (6B, LR53)

Alex Kelso: Had me resorting to the forestry to get away from waist-deep heather (yes, waist). The only hill I've ever been near to tears on, and it wasn't even worth it.

Scaw'd Fell (28B, LR78)

Andy Hyams: On a fiendish ascent from Garrogill (NT159031), there is a bog and several tricky fences around the ruined farmstead. Thereafter was extremely steep ground with thick heather and head-high bracken (in July). Not recommended.

Rhinog Fach and Fawr (30D, LR24)

Andy Hyams: There is horrendous heather between Rhinog Fach and Rhinog Fawr. I can see why most people tackle them separately. Good paths everywhere except between the two.
