Tips for the Tops:

Mullach Coire nan Geur-oirean (10D, LR41)

John Ward

Not having a bicycle with me, I did not fancy the long walk in from the east end of Loch Arkaig in the hot weather. Instead I decided on an approach from Glen Loy. I parked at the entrance to a small plantation at NN107845. From here I headed NW, passing between the crags on Am Mam and a plantation, to reach the bealach between Beinn Bhan and Meall a'Phubuill. This is a climb of about 220m. On the other side of the bealach I made out the traces of a path before dropping down through the remains of an old Caledonian forest to the River Mallie. This was easily fordable in June, though possibly a problem after wet weather. From here the route crosses the track in from Loch Arkaig and ascends the hill by the long grassy eastern ridge. The summit view is outstanding, with Gaor Bheinn ahead, the Glenfinnan hills to the south and Knoydart to the north-west. It might be possible to combine the hill with Meall a'Phubuill, but I decided to return the way I had come. I estimate that this route saved at least 45 minutes each way on the Loch Arkaig route.
