Radioing from the summits of Marilyns has become part of the Summits on the Air project, which encourages radio amateurs out into the hills. With several hundred participants it has been a success, and has introduced a new group to the Marilyns. I specifically contact people from the summits using Morse code with a short-wave transmitter. This of course slows progress on the hill compared to the purist 'Marilynistas'. In 2005 I ticked off 126 new ones, but there is little scope left within day-trip range. There have been many memorable ascents in all weathers, but the one that sticks most in my mind is Upper Park (31A). At 352m it's no giant, but the shooting woods that surround it were as creepy as any I have ever encountered. Although I didn't see anyone else, I was aware that I was not alone. The Welsh Borders and Tyne-Wash area have now been completed, and next year's target is north Wales.
