The highlight of the year was a two-week holiday with my wife to the Western Isles, during which I was among the party that joined Ann Bowker on her trip to the Shiants. We had fantastic walking, with the pick of the bunch being the Uig hills - Cracaval is my favourite hill name. A couple of days were also spent exploring Pairc. I have always regarded it as a great wilderness, and I dread to think what it will look like if the proposed wind farm is built. Already paths are penetrating the area, and though these make access easier, they do detract from the experience of being amid such unspoilt scenery. I also managed to get to Scarp and Seaforth Island during the two weeks, so picked up some rarely-climbed hills. I have already made a booking to return to Harris and Lewis this year, from where I hope a trip to St Kilda will be the highlight. The idea of spending several hours in a boat doesn't appeal, but the lure of St Kilda is too strong. Plans are also afoot to finish the Grahams this year (currently 43 left), so 2006 should be quite exciting walking-wise.
