Baglog: Brian Ewing (+63=928)

After the great summer of 2003 it was back to reality. No winter to speak of, and only six days skiing. Spring drizzled its way into summer, and so it continued for most of the year. Looking on the bright side, I did manage to get out a fair bit, with islands providing the outstanding memories. What is it about the island hills? They just seem to captivate the senses.

Early April: three days on Eigg, with hills, beaches and caves.

Late April: a week on Islay, with hills, beaches and distilleries.

July: two weeks island-hopping around Orkney.

A bright but windy day-trip to Hoy was probably the best outing of the year. The early morning ferry from Stromness gave the longest time to explore the three Marilyns on offer. The traverse of them gave brilliant views, aeroplane debris, skua attacks and incredibly varied ground. There was even time to do a bit of beachcombing while waiting for the ferry back to Stromness. I got talking to a Shetlander on the ferry back to the mainland, who told me they were having the best summer for years on Shetland and that I really should visit. He made it sound so good I will just have to go and have a wee explore in 2005.
